Annotation

The article focuses on the formation of the image of Grand Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich of Vladimir and the Battle of the Sit River in Russian historical memory during the second half of the 18th century. This battle, whose history is presented very ambiguously in the sources, became one of the symbols of resistance against the Mongols, and its participant — Grand Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich — was remembered by posterity as almost the main fighter against the invaders. The author concludes that such an interpretation likely did not correspond to historical reality. However, at the time, this portrayal was embraced by the compiler of the narrative in the Laurentian Chronicle. Subsequently, this version formed the basis of early historiographical accounts of the events of the Mongol invasion era, undergoing a rationalistic reinterpretation in line with the intellectual trends of its time.
