Annotation
The article analyzes the works of the hagiographer Cyril of Scythopolis (524 – after 559) in the context of studying the history of Alexandria and Egypt in Early Byzantine
times. Of the seven lives that make up the hagiographer’s creative heritage, the most detailed information sought is reflected in the “Life of St. Sabas”, “Life of St. Euthymius” and “Life of St. Cyriacus”. The author was well acquainted with the Egyptian monastic tradition, which influenced his works. The content of the works demonstrates a close connection between the regions. The works of Cyril of Scythopolis reflect the decisive struggle of the monastery saints against Monophysitism and Origenism. In describing the events of religious and political life and the participation in it of the hierarchs of the Alexandrian Church, he presented events from the position of a supporter of the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon in 451. The works of Cyril of Scythopolis reflect information about the changing position of Alexandria and Egypt in the religious and political life of the Eastern Roman Empire.
