Annotation

The article is devoted to the consideration of the process of reflecting the participation of the Soviet Union in the civil war in Angola in the Russian documentary films of 1991–2022. The research is interdisciplinary in nature, since it uses historical methods, methodology of visual anthropology, imagology, theory and history of cinema. The article analyzes the reasons of the growing interest of Russian citizens to the Soviet presence in Angola in recent decades, reveals the genre affiliation of domestic documentaries, analyzes it in terms of content, context, and cinematic techniques used. The study analyzed six films, a number of which were shown on central channels. It is concluded that the information contained in them is objective, truthful; drawn primarily from the memoirs of the participants in the events, who showed courage and heroism in the performance of international duty. The images of Soviet military specialists created by filmmakers form a positive assessment of the Soviet presence in Angola, which is seen in the creation of combat-ready armed forces of the NRA, the education of the modern Angolan military elite, which managed to defend the freedom and independence of Angola. The films are addressed to a wide audience, designed to tell the truth about Soviet participation in the conflict, to draw public attention to the Soviet heroic past and the problems of veterans of local wars and conflicts.
