Annotation
The article is devoted to the relevant and at the same time complex topic of the initial stage of the development of the trade union movement in Russia. The history of the emergence of trade unions has been studied by many researchers since the 1920s. However, the published works were based on very limited documentary materials, and various memoirs were often subjective and overly ideological. This creates certain difficulties in studying the earliest period of trade union functioning. In this study, the author analyzes the causes, specifics, and main forms of the movement’s existence, covering the period from the last third of the 19th century to 1905. From strikes and lockouts to illegal organizations that for the first time put forward not only social and economic demands, but also political ones. Based on the analysis of the funds of the State Archive of the Russian Federation, new sources from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are being introduced into circulation. (Funds R-6862 and R-6935). Fund 518 is dedicated to the organization of the Union of Unions, which greatly contributed to the development of the trade union movement in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. The term “political trade unions” mentioned in the Congress’s program documents is particularly interesting. Through this research, the author has identified
the reasons for the emergence of trade unions in Russia, the specific features of the first organizations in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the challenges faced by intra-union associations, and the key leaders of the trade union movement during this period.
