Annotation

The article is devoted to the consideration of the change in the status of Russia in the geopolitical rivalry in the space of the Danubian Principalities in the middle of the 18th century. An analysis of the circumstances that allowed the Russian Empire to be perceived in Moldova and Wallachia as a possible protector and counterweight to the Ottoman Empire is given. Previously, Poland and Austria played such a role. The main reason that allowed Russia in the middle of the 17th century to enter the geopolitical rivalry for influence in the Danube region seems to be the successful for Moscow start of the Russian-Polish war for Ukraine. The article examines the cases of appeals by the hospodars (or already ex-hospodars) Vasily Lupul, Georgy Stefan, Konstantin Shcherban, Mikhnya III to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich for protection or with a proposal to take the principality under his hand. In 1656, the Moldavian side brought, and even a draft treaty was approved in Moscow, on what conditions Moldavia would become a vassal of Russia. However, the author believes that there was no real chance of this and other similar plans being implemented and assesses Moscow’s cautious position, which did not want to seriously get involved in the affairs of principalities with which Russia did not even border, as justified.
