Annotation
The article considers the specifics and main directions of providing social assistance within noble corporations in the provinces of European Russia at the end
of the XIX – beginning of the XX centuries. An analysis of the historiography of the Russian nobility that has developed to date has revealed achievements and gaps in the study of the organization of guardianship and material support for poor nobles, the organization of boarding houses and schools for their children and orphans. The article is written on the basis of a set of published documents, office documentation stored in central and regional archives, as well as materials from congresses of the united nobility.
The application of traditional historical research methods and a historical and anthropological approach made it possible to describe the activities of a corporate organization in the framework of providing social and economic assistance to members of the corporation. A comparative analysis of the decisions of corporate organizations of the Central Chernozem and Volga provinces makes it possible to identify common features and different approaches in the organization of social practices of noble organizations.
The forms of providing material support to members of corporations and assisting noble families in raising and educating children and orphans are described. An assessment was given of the organization of noble mutual assistance funds, estate boarding houses, and the activities of noble guardians.
On the basis of the concept of everyday life, the attitude of the regional nobility to the system of organizing social assistance is shown. It is noted that the local nobility
ambiguously appreciated traditional forms of intra-class charity. It is proved that corporate organizations counted on state assistance in the implementation of social policy. The lack of unity in the views of representatives of the estate and the crown administration on the set of measures necessary to preserve the noble corporation and reproduce the estate identity made it difficult to transform the system of social charity.
