Annotation

The article is devoted to an urgent topic of modern Russian historiography — the problem of the relationship between the state and the Church during the dramatic period of the reign of Nicholas II, in the context of the growing crisis phenomena that eventually led to the destruction of the monarchy. The purpose of the study is to analyze some scientific papers devoted to this subject. In particular, the ar ticle analyzes S. L. Firsov’s monograph “The Orthodox Church and the State in the last decade of the existence of autocracy in Russia” (1996), which draws attention to the facts related to the moral decay of the Orthodox clergy in the pre-revolutionary period, with the gradual destruction of the Orthodox foundation of the state as a whole. The article notes that the problem of church-state relations in Russia is revealed in M. A. Babkin’s monograph “The Priesthood and the Kingdom (Russia, early twentieth century – 1918)” (2011), the author of which concluded that in 1917. The Holy Synod did nothing to save the monarchy, and the clergy, long before the overthrow of the tsarist regime, deliberately sought to distance the Church from the state. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that the disadvantage of M. A. Babkin’s work is the superficial study of the problem of the “kingdom” in contrast to the problem of the “priesthood”, whereas contradictions were observed in the bureaucratic apparatus of the Russian Empire, which partly contributed to the country’s movement towards revolution. The article draws a general conclusion that, with rare exceptions, modern Russian historiography is dominated by works that characterize the activities of the Church in a positive way. The state is seen as a bureaucratic machine that tried to clamp down on the church hierarchy. Although the authors raised important questions about the contradictions between Church and state in the pre-revolutionary period, they were never able to fully answer them.
