Annotation
V. G. Chertkov played a special role in the life and work of Leo Tolstoy. How did this happen, what place did the two historical figures occupy in each other’s lives, and how did they enrich each other? This will be discussed in this article. The basis for the reasoning was, first of all, the correspondence between Tolstoy and Chertkov,
as well as Chertkov’s memoirs, the diaries of S. A. Tolstoy, and the memoirs of their inner circle. The conclusions note the pattern of such a personality appearing in Tolstoy’s inner circle, as well as Chertkov’s significant contribution to popularizing Lev Nikolaevich’s ideas and creating the image of the great writer as a profound philosopher.
