Annotation

The article examines the period 1516–1521 in the Italian Wars’ political practice of the famous Florentine Francesco Guicciardini. The relevance of the topic is determined by the interest of Early Modern history studies in a detailed analysis of specific episodes in the history of the Italian Wars and the activities of certain individuals which have not been considered complexly. The author places a fundamental emphasis on the relationship between the practices of Guicciardini, a prominent figure in Italian politics, and the interests of papacy. Based on the analysis of a number of works by Francesco Guicciardini himself, as well as some works by his compatriots and contemporaries, the authoritative position of the Florentine in the administrative and diplomatic corps of the pontiff Leo X (Giovanni Medici) is demonstrated. As a result of the study, the conclusion was made on the reasonable and balanced nature of the 1516–1521’ political practice of Francesco Guicciardini in a number of administrative and diplomatic posts he occupied in the Medici papacy’ system. At the same time, the author of the study comes to the conclusion that the interests of the papacy and the interests of Florence during that period of military diplomacy in the Apennines were not equivalent, and the papacy of the House of Medici, rather, subordinated the Florentine political organism to its own interests.
