Annotation
Based on unpublished documents and sources of personal origin, the article examines the evolution of the protection of Emperor Alexander II against the background of the political events of the 1860s and early 1880s. The author analyzes the role of the emperor in creating a system of protection of residences and the formation of police protection units. The description of the Security Guards of the Third Department of His Imperial Majesty’s Own Chancellery as an integral part of the smart police project, developed in 1866 by P. A. Shuvalov, is given. The influence of the assassination attempts on Alexander II on the modernization of his guards is considered. The assessment by the head of the Security Guard K. I. Koch of the influence of M. T. Loris-Melikov on the development of the tsar’s security system is given. Special attention is paid to the myth of folk heroes miraculously saving the emperor, which, according to the author, was a serious obstacle to the modernization of security structures.
