Annotation

The archival material examines the activities of I. S. Aksakov during the period of publication of the Moskvich newspaper (1867–1868), which the author regards as disobeying the censorship order of the Minister of Internal Affairs P. A. Valuev. The demonstration of the most prominent Slavophile against the unfair system of administrative penalties against the press is all the more symbolic because it was on the pages of this body that he criticized all areas of activity of the law enforcement agency. The range of subjects covered in this publication reveals I. S. Aksakov’s ideas about legality and justice. In turn, the ban on Moskvich, initiated on the sidelines of the government, not only dealt a blow to the authority of the government, which disregarded the legal order, but also cast a shadow on the prestige of the monarchy. I. S. Aksakov’s struggle against censorship “arbitrariness” contributed, among other things, to the resignation of P. A. Valuev from the post of Minister of Internal Affairs.
