Annotation

The consequences of the annexation of Central Asia to the Russian Empire are considered in Russian historiography mainly in the context of the positive and negative aspects of this process for the annexed regions themselves. The consequences for the empire itself are © Виноградов А. Е., 2024 estimated mainly using outdated and incorrect data, from which it is concluded that expanding it to the southeast was a profitable enterprise. Historiography is under the influence of the Soviet tradition and the dogmas of historical materialism, which ordered to look for “objective pluses” in any process of nation-state building. The sum of financial and economic indicators, the results of military operations and diplomatic negotiations indicates that the conquest of the region brought Russia more expenses and increased internal and external instability.
