Annotation

The simple abbreviation Glavrepertkom hides a number of renamings of the organization, which was subordinate to various structures in the People’s Commissariat for Education. The Glavrepertkom paid special attention to the aesthetic aspect of cultural products in connection with the political tasks of the current moment. This was important in a country with a moderate literacy rate. The song, performed from the stage, on the radio or on the gramophone, at that time had an incomparably larger audience than the book in a national language. The saved dossiers testify to a well-established mechanism for controlling the variety and stage repertoire. This mechanism (disordered until the early 1920s) had already taken shape by the beginning of the first five-year plan. The decision of the Glavrepertkom was usually valid for one year. The repertoire committee often demanded that Roma pop songs be presented with translation; these valuable sources were poorly preserved. The Roma choir then remained a profitable enterprise. New times demanded new industrial plots. However, low-class restaurant gypsyism was banned. Glavlit’s permission to publish the text was usually regarded as a sufficient precedent for its public execution from the stage. The system of control evolved from the predominance of aesthetic criteria to the dominance of more understandable political and ideological criteria. In 1939, even romance as a classical music genre was officially rehabilitated.
