Annotation

The article deals with the history of Russian-Khivan relations in 1840–1864. This was the time between the Winter Campaign of General V. Perovsky and the Russian conquest of Maverannakhr, which was followed by direct planning for the landing of Russian troops on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea and the foundation of a trading post in Krasnovodsk Bay. The involvement of the rare sources helps to trace the individual phases in the development of the political views of the Russian government on the problem of security in the region. The Russian authorities initially sought to complete the conquest of Khiva by military means. Later, they abandoned the idea of the need for active military action and moved on to the concept of control over the Khiva Khanate from the east and west (from the Caspian coast). The sources argue that in addition to the security of Russian subjects, Russia’s most important goal in the region was to ensure the trading interests of the empire and to resist British influence. In 1864, the interest of the Russian Empire in Khiva fell, and the issue of conquering an outpost on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea, on the contrary, became of paramount importance.
