Annotation
Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov is known in Russia and abroad as a biologist, agronomist, geneticist, botanist, but no attempt has yet been made to consider him as an outstanding Afghan orientalist, and author of this article was decided to make such an attempt. The question chosen for the study seems to be quite relevant, since the scientific heritage of N. I. Vavilov requires the most careful study and analysis; and also for the reason that Afghanistan is still an insufficiently studied country, in comparison with an other countries of the East. The main goal of the work is to find out the contribution of N. I. Vavilov in Russian Afghan studies and highlight the main merits of the scientist in this direction. The article is based on the analysis of the work Agricultural Afghanistan, on the pages of which the great Soviet scientist appears in the guise of not only an agronomist and botanist, but also an orientalist-ethnographer, a specialist in Afghanistan. Based on the analysis of this work, the author comes to the conclusion that the ethnographic and cultural studies of Afghanistan, carried out by N. I. Vavilov and his colleagues during a scientific expedition to Afghanistan in 1924, firstly, at least partially do not lose their relevance even now, one hundred years later; and secondly, they allow us to assert that Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov can rightfully be called one of the outstanding Russian researchers of Afghanistan.
