The study of the activities of political salons seems relevant, as it helps to identify unofficial political ties that existed in the Russian Empire in the late XIX – early XX century. Among the St. Petersburg aristocratic salons of that time a special place was occupied by the salon of baroness Varvara Ivanovna Ikskul von Hildenbandt (1850–1928). Literary and political evenings, usually held on Thursdays, were attended by famous cultural figures and politicians. For the first time in historiography, archival sources (letters, telegrams) from the funds of the Manuscript Department of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, directly related to V. I. Ikskul, were involved. The conclusion is made about the amorphousness of the political and religious beliefs of the baroness. Having a reputation as a liberal and a supporter of the emancipation of women, Ixkul sometimes invited staunch conservatives to her meetings. Known as a follower of the teachings of L. N. Tolstoy the baroness, who harshly criticized the tsarist government, tried to exert political influence through a number of senior officials (defending Tolstoy’s teachings, obstructing the tsarist decree on the dissolution of the First State Duma, etc.), but these attempts were unsuccessful. It is emphasized that, being a bright representative of the culture of the Silver age, Ikskul can be attributed to the popular philosophical and religious movement among the intelligentsia at that time — God-seeking. In its course, one should consider the baroness Rasputin’s infatuation, his invitations to salon meetings. In modern historiography, there is a point of view that the participants of the salon used the “elder” in their political games to fight against the tsarist government. The article concludes that the baroness’ fascination with Rasputin’s
personality was quite sincere and logically fit into her religious and philosophical ideas.
