Annotation

In the article the author analyzes the perception of the personality of Peter the Great and his transformations by Konstantin Kavelin — a prominent theorist of Russian liberalism, one of the founders of a state school in historical science, an active participant in the preparation of the abolition of serfdom. The reader can understand better Kavelin’s historical views, formed in the social and cultural context of the 1840s, when an educated part of Russian society began to look for evidence of the need for reforms in the past and particularly in the era of the emperor. The Russian liberal considered the role of state as the main transformative force that created the conditions for the formation of personality and movement towards freedom. The evolution of Kavelin’s attitude to the transformations and personality of Peter the Great in 1860s is analyzed. The author reveals the factors that have slightly changed the perspective of the liberal’s perception of the era of the Peter’s reign. Special attention is paid to Kavelin’s understanding of the impact of external influences and internal needs on the implementation of reforms, his thoughts on the role of foreign borrowing and the relationship between national and European values in the development of Russia.
