Annotation

The article is devoted to the study of the Moscow education system in 1939–1940. The study of documents from the R-528 fund of the Moscow City Department of Public Education of the Central State Archive of Moscow allowed the authors to identify the main factors of influence and the main trends in the work of the Moscow education system on the eve of the war. The huge network of educational institutions in the capital included institutions of various levels and performed various functions – education, upbringing, organization of children’s leisure, training of teaching staff and methodological support of the educational process — and required intense attention from the Moscow City Department of Public Education. By 1939, the number of schools in Moscow had grown significantly, but there were still not enough school buildings, and many schools operated in two shifts. The number of teachers and the quality of their training in Moscow grew rapidly, a significant number of Moscow teachers had higher education, especially among teachers in grades 5–10, and their training was tailored to the needs of a growing city. With the approach of the war, compulsory military education was introduced in Moscow schools and schoolchildren were trained to pass the standards of the GTO, Voroshilovsky Strelok, in antiaircraft and chemical defense and sanitary matters. The general public, represented by patronizing enterprises, district party committees, parents and companies managing public utilities, was involved in organizing active, rich and developing leisure activities for children and adolescents.
