Annotation
The article discusses the preparation and implementation of the operation to overthrow the democratically elected government of M. Mosaddegh in Iran in 1953. The article analyzes the situation with the crisis around Iranian oil, in which the UK has exhausted economic and diplomatic ways to return the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company under its control. Using the example of the correspondence of American presidents, the double policy of the United States, which sought to push Iran to conclude an unfavorable agreement around the AINK, is revealed. Public assurances from the United States in support of the Iranian course towards an independent policy and a guarantee of sovereignty were accompanied by secret preparations for Operation Ajax. Based on declassified telegrams and other diplomatic documents of the US State Department, the role of American diplomats and intelligence officers in the coup of August 1953 is shown. Documents declassified in 2017 on Operation Ajax describe the nominal role of the shah in anti-government protests. The conclusions of the study demonstrate the consequences of the secret military intervention of the United States, which for several decades received a loyal Shah’s government, but at the same time laid the foundation for the 1979 revolution.
