Annotation

The purpose of the article is to reveal the features of the study and evaluation of the political investigation of the Russian Empire in different periods of development of Russian historiography. For a long time, for reasons of both ideological and practical nature, the history of the system of political investigation and its core, the gendarmerie, was not studied specifically. A historiographical review of the problem will make it possible to identify the least studied aspects of the stated problem and outline the prospects for its research.
