Annotation
The article is devoted to the participation of Metropolitan Nikon, the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, in the Novgorod events of 1650. The Novgorod uprising
revealed another facet of Vladyka’s character, his ability to speak to rebellious crowds, showing both flexibility and firmness when necessary in an effort to «comfort» the rebellion and restore order. Nikon appears in the Novgorod events as a major church and statesman, whose career rise does not seem accidental after he showed a pattern of behavior of a true ascetic and defender of the “sovereign cause”.
