Annotation
The inclusion of one of the most influential socialist parties — the Socialist Revolutionaries — in the government coalition in the spring of 1917, as a consequence of a compromise with various political parties (including bourgeois ones)
required the fulfillment of certain conditions, the details of which were never made public. Conclusions drawn by historians during the Soviet period and long entrenched in domestic historiography coined the term “kadetization” for the subsequent policy and assigned the concise designation “accommodators” to the socialists who joined the coalition. The aim of this article is to examine the measures taken by the Socialist-Revolutionaries to address the agrarian question after February 1917. Based on party materials, it considers the attitude towards transferring land to the peasants, the acceptance of practices previously rejected — such as landleasing and redemption — and their significance in the emerging situation. A comparison is made between the new measures and the earlier approach to the land issue, as outlined in the program adopted by the First Congress of the Socialist Revolutionaries in 1905, as well as the projects presented in the First and Second Dumas, highlighting the differences and the consequences that followed. The author
also draws attention to the involvement of figures who, having held positions in ministries and committees, had previously remained in the background in formulating these measures. The article demonstrates some of the consequences of such a policy and concludes with reflections on the guiding principles of the party leaders in conducting agrarian reform and the reasons behind the changes in their program.
