Annotation

Terrorism in Russia between 1866–1911 was the forerunner of mass terrorism in the modern world. Many historians believe that terrorism in Russia was an unsuccessful means of political struggle, since the terrorists failed to achieve their main goal — to overthrow the autocracy. Soviet historians argued that terrorism was based on false concepts of revolutionary struggle and that terrorists replaced the struggle of the masses with intellectual combat against the autocracy. Such interpretations do not correspond to historical realities and require some adjustment. Despite many setbacks, left-wing terrorists were still able to achieve some tactical and ideological goals. The Narodnaya Volya organization played a key role in this process. The scale and duration of Russian terrorism made it very different from terrorism in European countries. The terrorists managed to force the government to take the path of repression, thereby delaying the transformation of Russia into a liberal and constitutional state of the European type.
