Annotation

The article examines the statements of contemporaries of Archimandrite Vitaly (Maksimenko), devoted to his economic, political and social activity in Volyn province in the pre-revolutionary period. Based on the analysis of a number of historical sources (first of all, publications in the Volyn press of the archimandrite’s supporters and political opponents), it is shown that the activity of the Pochaev monk caused contradictory reactions. The article notes that criticism of Fr. Vitaly came both from his ideological opponents and from the ecclesiastical and secular authorities. The first considered the archimandrite to be a self-serving monk who sought to enrich himself through the collection of «allied fifty per cent» and the activities of the Pochaev Bank. The latter accused Fr. Vitaly of radicalising the peasant masses and spreading anti-Polish, anti-Jewish and anti-government sentiments among the people. However, there were still more positive responses. Contemporaries noted that although the Archimandrite of Pochaev often used unacceptable language in his agitation, he was a genuine people’s intercessor who honestly cared about the needs of the peasants and was able to offer the Volyn peasantry legal methods of improving their material situation.
