Annotation
The article describes the place of the institute of state protection in the political space of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the XX century. The author focuses
on the fact that the beginning of the Socialist-Revolutionary terror forced to take serious measures aimed at ensuring the safety of Nicholas II and his family members. They unwittingly made the emperor and his family feel like prisoners in their own country. Therefore, the strengthening of security should be carried out in the most delicate form, so as not to provoke the wrath of the highest personages. Special attention had to be paid to the security support of large-scale anniversary events. The secret service and post work were not supposed to deprive the festivities of a national character, to emphasize the distance between the monarch and his subjects. Finally, the guards had to perform functions that were initially uncharacteristic of her — for example, to try to eliminate the “elder” G. E. Rasputin from the royal entourage.
