TOPONYMS AND ETHNONYMS RUZARAMARCHA AND RUZZI: WHAT IS RUSSIAN ABOUT THEM?

Annotation

Mentioned in European Medieval sources the terms Ruzzi and Ruzaramarcha are often associated with the ethnonym Rus and are considered to be its specific Old High German reflection. In the light of such assumptions, early Russia appears as a significant ethno-state formation with active trade relations up to the upper Danube. These hypotheses do not take into account the wide distribution in the German lands The Frankish Empire had other languages, notably early Italian. Ruzzi and Ruzaramarcha are united only by a common root, meaning a circular movement, while for the first case there is an Italian folk etymology of the ethnonym, the second case had nothing to do with the names of the tribes. Such an analysis of the above terms allows, on the one hand, to clarify the list of forms used to designate Russia, on the other hand, to establish the geography of the routes of merchants from Venice.
