Annotation

Nicholas II elevated Stolypin as a resolute fighter against the revolutionary movement. At first, the emperor was very pleased with him. But then conflicts began to arise between the tsar and the chairman of the Council of Ministers. The author’s goal is to find out what modern historiography sees as their causes. The article presents different points of view on the nature and severity of these conflicts. It is noted that most of them were caused by P. A. Stolypin’s attempts to expand the powers of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers. Stolypin actually took into his own hands the appointment to ministerial posts, which was the exclusive right of the monarch. In addition, Stolypin supported the attempts of the State Duma to strengthen control over the defense sector, which displeased Nicholas II. Despite these conflicts, Stolypin, according to many authors, retained the tsar’s trust until his death. However, there is also an opposite point of view in historiography. The arguments of the authors who occupy both positions are given.
