Annotation
In the article, based on the material of the metric books, the author defines the features of the marriage circle and the marriage choice of widowed Moscow
philistines in the first half-middle of the XIX century. The metrical books of Nikitsky and Zamoskvoretsky “soroks”2 for 1810, 1821, 1841 and 1859 were used. In the first half of the XIX century, at least a third of the population of Moscow lived there. The study shows, that the marriage circle of middle-class widows included the same social groups as the marriage circle of middle-class daughters. However, during repeated marriages, representatives of semi-privileged groups of the population (merchants, officials) became grooms of middle-class women less often, widows also more often married serfs. Among middleclass widows, the proportion of marriages with representatives of their own group was higher than among middle-class girls. The author connects this with the presence in Moscow of a mass of poor burghers, including those who came from serfs who did not have their own housing. The presence of any property, especially inherited from her husband at home, made middle-class widows a very attractive party for this social group. The study demonstrates serious differences in the demographic behavior of Moscow philistines from the model typical of the Russian peasantry: within their own group (Moscow philistinism), the proportion of remarriages of women was very high, there was a predominance of remarriages of philistines with men who married for the first time.
