Annotation

This article is devoted to the analysis of the diplomatic techniques used by the Patriarch of Constantinople, Nicholas Mystikos, in a letter to the Caliph of Baghdad, Al-Muqtadir, in order to stop the aggression of the Arabs against the civilians of the island of Cyprus in 911–912. The author points out that the patriarch appealed to the legal consciousness of the addressee and wrote about the need to comply with the condominium agreement, as well as to investigate the problem from the point of view of the norms of Byzantine or Sharia legislation. The article emphasizes the special foreign policy significance of the letter in question for the history of the Byzantine state.
