Annotation
This article addresses one of the key issues in Indo-European studies (also known as fault lines), namely, the direction of Indo-Aryan migrations to the Iranian plateau and the time of their arrival there. The solution to these questions determines the time and place of dialect divergence between Indo-Aryans and Iranians, and, accordingly,
the time and place of the formerly undivided Indo-Iranian dialect group. The article summarizes the evidence supporting the direction of Indo-Aryan migrations from the Volga through the steppes of Kazakhstan and the oases of Central Asia to Tappeh Hesar (in Iran), establishing turning points along this route and the dates of their passage. Overall, the article places Indo-Aryan migrations within the broader context of ethnic processes that took place in the Eurasian steppes during the Bronze Age.
