Annotation
Simon Pitersen was a shipbuilder who arrived in Russia from Denmark in 1696 and was engaged in shipbuilding at the Voronezh shipyards in 1696–1700. The figure of the Danish master had previously attracted the attention of researchers of the history of Peter the Great’s shipbuilding, but a separate study dedicated to this master hadn’t been created. An important work by the Danish researcher K. Rasmussen, dedicated to the role of his compatriots in the creation and functioning of the Azov fleet, has not been taken into account in modern Russian historiography. An analysis of documents and historical research showed that despite his little experience in shipbuilding, S. Pitersen played an important role in the construction of ships by landowners’ associations — kumpanstvo. The activities of the Danish master are very indicative, its analysis allows us to see the typical problems that shipbuilders faced at this historical stage, to reveal the main reasons why most of the ships built during this period turned out to be of little use in the navy. Like most of the first-call masters, S. Pitersen did not have much shipbuilding experience, but it soon became clear that most of the masters did not have the skills that the Dane had. This led to the fact that he soon had to manage the construction of 8 ships at the same time. S. Pitersen had to solve complex problems: build many ships in a very short time, resolve conflicts with the masters who came under his command, solve the most difficult task of adapting ship designs to the shallow waters of the Voronezh, Don and Azov rivers, etc.
