Annotation

An important event of the second half of the 19th century was the appearance of the first body in the Russian state for the management of archaeological research — the Imperial Archaeological Commission. Her work was of great importance in the formation of Russian archaeology as a science, in the development of restoration practice and in the formation of measures for the protection of cultural monuments in Russia in the 19th – early 20th centuries. The work of this institution contributed to the research and preservation of the most important architectural ancient buildings: the Church of the Savior on Nereditsa in Novgorod and the Savior on Berestov in Kiev, the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, the Trinity Cathedral of the Ipatievsky Monastery in Kostroma, Ferapontov Monastery, etc. The purpose of this article is to study the process of creating the Imperial Archaeological Commission and to study the most important area of activity of the institution — the preservation of architectural monuments of the Russian state.
