Annotation

The article is devoted to the consideration of the artistic image of a bureaucrat (in particular, governors), created in Russian literature of the second half of the 1850s – 60s. During this period, a new type of officials gradually began to emerge on the historical stage — with a different moral and managerial ethos than before. From the former (“Nikolaev”) generation they were distinguished by honesty, personal decency, a heightened understanding of duty to the country and society, incorruptibility, intolerance to bribes and corruption. Just such a character-official in the period under review appeared in poetry (N. A. Nekrasov), in drama (N. M. Lvov, V. A. Sologub) and in prose (A. F. Pisemsky). However, some writers (F. M. Dostoevsky, I. S. Turgenev, I. A. Goncharov), recognizing the emergence of a new kind of civil servants, were convinced that posturing, formalism, callousness and even deceit still prevail among them. However, both the former and the latter agreed on one thing: a bureaucrat with positive moral characteristics, ideals and values appeared in Russian life.
