Annotation
The article is an analysis of status of Kazakh khans under sovereignty of the Khanate of Khiva in 1810s – 1870s. There is an attempt to clarify reasons of taking by Kazakh sultans of the subjection of Khiva rulers, specific features of their relations, position of the Russian imperial frontier authorities towards such khans, their activities and their support by Khiva. Author finds that pretenders for khan’s title in the Junior Jhuz were no more than an instrument of influence of the Khanate of Khiva on the relations with the Russian Empire, moreover, untrustworthy instrument, and that reflected in often removals and even eliminations of Kazakh vassals of Khiva.
