Annotation

This paper analyzes the article by G. V. Vernadsky The Hungarian Campaign of 1849, which was not previously considered by researchers. G. V. Vernadsky became interested in this problem in the conditions of the outbreak of the First World War. In the article, the famous historian examines the reasons for Russia’s assistance to Austria in 1849; the tangle of contradictions in the Austrian Empire of a political, social, and interethnic nature; the course of I. F. Paskevich’s military campaign; the tragedy of A. Gergei and other leaders of the Hungarian movement; sympathy for Hungarians, which gradually develops among Russian officers; Austria’s ingratitude towards Russia in 1853. G. V. Vernadsky focuses on the betrayal on the part of Austria towards Russia, which is very relevant.
